Things to do in greyton
Greyton has certainly embraced the slow life, but there’s still plenty to do in around this sleepy Overberg village.
Here are a few things to keep you busy while you are there – if you feel the need to be doing something!
There’s a delightful little notice up on a shop window in Greyton that describes life in this much-loved Overberg town perfectly. It reads, “If we’re not in, it’s because we are taking the dog for a walk hanging out in the village late because we had to walk the dog or grab a coffee with a friend”. Greyton has certainly embraced the slow life, but there’s plenty to do in and around the village – if you feel the need to be doing something!
Ears Donkey Sanctuary
EARS is dedicated to a dog that pulled a small group of people together determined to make a difference in the lives of all animals in Greyton, Genadedal, Heuwelkroon, Bosmanskloof and Vorrstekraal. Ears is an angel that comes with fur and four paws, without her this organization would not have come to be. Help us grow into the organization we have the potential to be.
Greyton Animal Farm Sanctuary
Greyton Farm Animal Sanctuary is situated just 7 kms outside the village of Greyton in the Western Cape on a 40 hectare private farm, owned by the founders of the sanctuary, Nicola Vernon and Rohan Millson. It was established in 2014 and is a registered non-profit. The farm is currently home to 111 pigs, 52 sheep, ten goats, five cows, two geese, two chickens and a duck as well as six dogs and seven cats.
Valley Food Gardens
The Red Cross and supporting organisations are providing food parcels to vulnerable families in the Genadendal Valley in the Overberg Region of South Africa in the wake of the Covid-19 lockdown. But this is an unsustainable solution to food insecurity. Once the pandemic grips the cities, resources and attention may largely go there, and as the economy takes many years to recover and food insecurity persists, we may have to fall back more and more on our own resources and resourcefulness in the four towns in our valley.
Greyton Mountain Bike Trails
The Greyton MTB Trail network is situated at the foothills of the Riviersonderend Mountain range and surrounds the small village of Greyton. Our MTB trails are built to a high standard with flowing berms, exhilarating descents and wilderness adventures. Come and explore the sublime MTB trails of Greyton.
Hiking, walking & running trails
Hiking and walking in Greyton is an absolute must! There are many paths, some of them in the nature reserve, others along the rivers and no least, the historic walk in the village.
Overnight hike to McGregor
The Boesmanskloof Hiking Trail is an overnight hike from Greyton to McGregor. This was the first overnight I have done and while it was definitely a physical and mental challenge, I thoroughly enjoyed the overall experience. It may be on the slightly longer side for a first overnight hike but it’s definitely doable!
